Resource

Reflection

For this blog post, I researched Khan Academy as a program to help students prepare for the SAT.  I was so blown away by the free, personalized resources that Khan Academy provides.  Students are able to connect their scores from college board in order to create a customized study plan.  Khan Academy even creates study plans based on the amount of time the student has to prepare for the test.

Programs like Khan Academy are so important because they even the playing field for students.  Students who are not able to afford private test prep tutoring or extensive preparatory classes are not at a huge advance over other students.  This will in turn help all students earn higher scores on the SAT and thus provide them with more opportunities for financial aid for college.

The other thing that I really like about Khan Academy is that it creates a connection between preparing for a standardized test and the classroom.  Many test prep courses teach you HOW to take the test rather than improving the skills that you are weak in.  Khan Academy and the College Board identify the specific skills that students need help in and prepare an individualized study plan for them.  The student practicing for the SAT is also learning how to use online resources to "fill in the gaps".  Khan Academy is used by many of my students when they are absent or need a topic to be explained again.  This program teaches students to advocate for themselves by finding resources to aid in their understanding of the classroom material.
