EEND 678 Artifact #1

Resources

For this artifact I included both by Garden Project PBL and the three differentiated versions of the PBL.  For the PBL, I created a Garden Project in which my students are required to calculate the amount of mulch, flowers, and fencing is needed for a garden given various specifications.  The project requires students to calculate sector area and the length of an arc within the project.  The students are also given a budget, and they must adjust their calculations accordingly in order to stay within budget.  I begin Semester 2 with this project, and I end Semester 2 with a similar project in which students need to design a floor plan for a house.  This is a great into PBL activity to prepare my students for the end of year project.

Differentiated Project #1: Translated Document

save image          For my first revision, I used a feature in Google Docs (see image to the right) that allowed me to make a translated copy of this document.  Google offers a wide variety of languages to choose from.  This feature is very quick and easy and is great for translating a document for an ELL student or a document that I need to send home to a parent whose primary language is not English.

Differentiated Project #2: Chunked Assignment

Many of my students have 504s or IEPs for anxiety or need help with organization for projects.  My second differentiated assignment gave my students an assignment that was broken into six separate sections with the rubric for each section included.  This would be a great thing to give to a case manager working with one of my students in study skills or to send home to a parent to help the student stay on pace with the rest of the class.  I also included checkpoints for the student to check in with me for the project.

Differentiated Project #3: Mind Map

My final revision could be done in conjunction with Revision #2.  For this revision, I would work with a small group of students to create a mind map using an online tool such as coggle to plan out the project and make the connections between the math vocabulary and the real world applications before the student began.  This way the student would have a visual to refer back to if he or she got stuck while working through the project.
